Magazine Photo Shoot

Using my own Canon 1000D enabled me to take my own photos in the school studio independently. It allowed me to take responsibility of my own photo's and feel more independent. This is effective as it made me and my model feel more comfortable around each other by being on our own.
The studio contained a white backdrop, a key light, a filler light, a tripod, my model and my own camera.
The white backdrop was effective because it made my pictures come out clearer and made my model stand out.
The key light was essential. This made the model come up the clearest and it allowed all features to be shown up on the images without any shadows/ blurs.
The filler light was essential too. Using a filler light ensured no unnecessary shadows appeared on the taken images. This was effective as without the shadows, the images came out clearer.
The tripod ensured no images were blurry and it enabled me to take the images at a reasonable level where the model did not looked forced into a bad position.
My own camera was obviously key. Without this, no images would have been taken. Because I used my own camera, I felt confident in taking my images as I know how everything works. The camera has a flash. Again, this helped with the freshness of the images. However, sometimes the flash did not work depending on where the model was stood therefore this is negative because the images were not that clear.
My model was effective because she is quite photogenic therefore even unexpected images I took of her came out great.
Overall, I am satisfied with my images so far as they came out very clear and the model provided a bubbly personality I needed for my images to look the way i wanted them to be.

Chosen Magazine Title

Chosen Magazine Title

X

I have decided on 'X' for my magazine title.
I have chosen this because I was inspired by 'V' magazine. I like the idea of having it perfectly in the centre of the magazine cover however I could place it anywhere on the magazine without it being in the way as it only takes up a short space.
I have also chosen 'X' as my magazine title because it is simplistic. This is effective because it goes well with the idealised plan of my magazine- simplistic and organised.
Lastly, I chose 'X' because it makes readers think of many words which come from the same sound. Words such as 'examine', 'excellent' and 'exciting' are examples. I think 'examine' is a good word to relate to as it implies to the readers that me, the creator, wants them to read and look through my magazine. 'Excellent' is effective because it infers that the magazine contains excellent articles or has been recommended as excellent. Lastly, 'exciting' is effective because it implies that the magazine contains some interesting articles/ information.

Overall, I chose 'X' mainly because it simplifies my magazine and the title can be adjusted for the magazine through the use of colour, size and font.

Chosen Artist Name

Artist Name
To find the idea of an artist name, I used 'Wikipedia Random Articles' and my own ideas. Wikipedia gave me words such as:

  • MLAK
  • Castillo
  • Eells
  • Turgeon
  • Luciana
  • Rosa
  • Project
  • East
All of these words were interesting. They all give a different effect. However, I considered my target audience and decided they were not very feminine therefore would not go well with my magazine.
I considered 'Luciana' for my model however there is already a female artist with this name and I wanted to be original. I then considered 'Rosa' but it did not sound English and my model is from the UK and so is the magazine therefore my main target audience would be an English audience. Although I did not choose these as my artist's name, I did like the idea of having a unique name, so therefore I considered my own idea's too.

In order to create my own idea I had to consider many things such as people I know with unusual names, celebrities etc.
Finally, I came up with my artist's name.

Orla East

I decided to have this name due to a variety of ideas. I thought of 'Orla' because I know somebody with the name. I thought it was effective as it was unique, different and unusual and that is how I aim to make my magazine. I then looked up what 'Orla' meant. Many connotations came from it such as it meaning 'gold' 'precious' and it is a name used referring to someone as a 'princess'. Of course, these all are quite feminine things therefore goes well with my magazine.
I decided to add 'East' into the name for a few reasons. Although 'East' came up on Wikipedia, it allowed me to consider which celebrities have unusual names such as that one. Immediately, I thought 'Kanye West', a famous rapper. Although that is his last name, it is memorable and I thought perhaps if my target audience spoke about 'Kanye West' to each other, this would make them think of 'Orla East' as it is a short jump away from it. I also decided on adding 'East' because it gives the artist a bit of background. The model/ artist is from the East Midlands therefore links well.

Artist Profile
Name - 'Orla East'
Age Range - 17-19 (Appeal to both younger and older audiences this way)
Music Genre - Popular Music
Musical Influences - Beyonce, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea
Members - 1 (Female)

The artist's musical influences are these as she likes to be quirky, individual and every song she aims to stand out and be different. She enjoys Beyonce's voice because she can fit every genre especially with her husband. She also likes her fashion sense. She likes Rihanna because she has a bad side to her (also with Miley Cyrus). She likes how Miley Cyrus is not afraid to be different and Iggy Azalea because she's also different.

Audience Research Questionnaire Feedback

Below is my audience research questionnaires. I created my audience research questionnaire via 'Surveymonkey.com'. Using this website to create my questionnaire was effective because it was less time consuming and made the process faster. The website enabled me to print out the questionnaires for me to give to an age group included in my target audience. I believe this is effective because it allows me to take into consideration what they like/ enjoy and I can use these ideas in my magazine.
As you can see, almost half of the group I asked preferred 'Popular Music' over any other genre. This is effective because it means my magazine (if it was to be real) would apply to this audience. Although a few said that popular music wasn't their favourite, this does not mean they have not taken it into consideration. Ellie, Emma, Lucy, Abi and Jess chose other genres (not pop). However, by reading their responses, their favourite genre's work well with popular music. Emma wrote that 'Folk' was her favourite music genre. This compliments 'Pop' well as folk artists such as the old-fashioned Taylor Swift was included in the 'UK Top 40' a lot.
Lucy wrote that 'Dance' music was her favourite genre. This is effective as many dance artists such as 'Neon Jungle' and 'Matrix & Futurebound' are featured in the charts.
Abi wrote that 'Alternative', 'Rock', 'Indie' and 'Folk' were her favourite genres. I believe this is effective for the same reasons as above. Artists/ bands such as 'Mumford & Sons' and 'Arctic Monkeys' are in the 'UK Top 40' on a regular basis.
Lastly, Jess and Ellie said that they like Pop music but it isn't their favourite. However, both chose songs which have been featured in the charts before so this highlights they are interested in the genre.
From this questionnaire I can infer that although 'Popular Music' may not be everyone favourite, this target audience group still takes an interest in it even if it is just on the Radio or at parties. Everybody has different lengths of enjoying pop music but I believe this is effective because it drives me to create a magazine which everybody in my target audience enjoys.

Respond to Staff Feedback

Below I have screens hotted all of my teachers comments on how to improve and responded to them. I believe this is effective because it allows me to keep up to date and improve on what my teachers think I need to improve on:

Preliminary Work Reflection

How does your prelim represent particular social groups?

With the magazine being for Lutterworth College, I created it to aim at age groups which are in the school. This includes ages 14 to 18. The population of the college is around 2000 pupils and teachers. Obviously for a target audience this is quite minimal for a magazine. However, the magazine will only appeal to or be relevant to those who work or attend the school. I believe the main target group for this magazine would be those who are interested in the school itself and what it has to offer (such as stereotypical Geeky students of all ages).

Who would be the intended audience for your product?

The intended audience for my magazine is the students in the college. This is because the magazine features articles such as activities to consider doing after school, revision help and newsletters etc. The magazine is aimed to appeal to those who are actually interested in what the school has to offer.

How did you attract/ address your audience?
I attracted my audience by having an image of a student on the front cover. I believe this is effective because it allows readers to identify who the target audience is if it is not obvious enough. I also used the school logo. I think this is effective because it allows readers to identify which college it is from  so students from the college can appeal to it. The logo's colours address my audience. This is because it appeals to the GCSE pupils uniforms therefore they can address the magazine is for themselves. On the contents page, I have used alliteration. The use of alliteration stand out to the readers as it rolls off the readers tongue during reading. This is effective because the sentence sounds appealing.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout creating my preliminary magazine, it has become increasingly evident that technology is time consuming and needs to be thought out thoroughly. Using a variety of technologies in my preliminary work has allowed me to get used to them so I will be better at using them on the real thing. I believe getting used to technology such as professional cameras and Photoshop is essential because otherwise I will struggle during the real creation.
By using a professional camera to take my images is nothing new to me. I am used to this however i do not use my camera on a regular basis therefore it was good to get used to all of the buttons again.
By learning how to use Photoshop is extremely effective. I have used similar applications before however this one was more advanced therefore it was a good idea to use whilst creating my magazine so I was able to get used to the application before the real magazine.

Preliminary Work - School Magazine Contents Page

Preliminary Work - School Magazine Cover

By using photo, I was able to create an example of a photoshop magazine. This is effective because it enables me to get used to the programme and learn skills and techniques to make my real magazine better and improved.

Favourite Magazine Analysis and Potential Problems

When analysing magazine covers, contents pages and double page spreads, I can now identify which magazine is my favourite and why. I have decided that 'Spin' magazine is my favourite magazine. I decided on this magazine being my favourite due to a variety of reasons:

Magazine Title
The magazine title for 'Spin' magazine is intriguing. I like the idea of the title being quite short because you can do a lot with it and not have to worry about it taking up too much space on the cover or in the magazine.
The magazine cover I analysed was perfect for this magazine title because it contained a main image of Frank Ocean in a blurred vision. This went with 'Spin' very well as it did look like he was spinning. The irony of the image and title is entertaining here.
The red box behind the title is effective as it compliments the white writing well and makes it stand out more.
I like the idea of 'Spin magazine title being in capitals because it looks important and makes a statement.
The white writing is effective because it makes their magazines look modern and up-to-date.

Simplistic
Simple magazines are my favourite. This is because they do not look over complicated therefore are easier to read. By creating a magazine which is simplistic allows the magazine to appeal to a wider range audience because more people will be able to read it without any hassle. I also like simple magazines because I believe they look more appealing and professional.

Colour Pallet
The use of colour is interesting. The use of black and white is positive because it means the magazine appeals to a wider audience not just one such as males. I believe black and white makes the magazine look modern and also black and white is equal therefore nobody should have a problem with it. I'm not a great fan of the colour red however on the front cover of 'Spin' magazine it works well because the background of the magazine title matches Frank Ocean's headband/bandana. Over I like the colour pallet because it's simple and I also like the idea of one colour standing out. This is something I am considering in my own magazine.

Main Focal Image's
The main focal images in the magazine are effective throughout. I think this because it splits up the ratio of text and images. Because there is a lot of images means that the magazine could apply to a wider audience (to those who do not enjoy reading such as the younger generation) however the magazine could still apply to those who enjoy to read as it still contains a lot of writing. Main images make articles and front covers stand out from the magazines around them.

Layout
The layout of the magazine is great. The contents page is set out clearly making it easier for readers to go from one page to another without any confusion. They can find what they are looking for simply. The double page spread I analysed too is effective. The article's text has been set out in columns to ensure readers can read the article without any problems.

Overall, i think the magazine appeals to me a lot is because of it's simplicity. It looks individual and stands out from the crowd of other over the top magazines. Simplistic is all it has to be to get my attention. Busy magazines discourage me and I do not want my magazine to be over complicated.

Considering all of the features which appeal to me from this magazine I can now think about any problems which I can foresee in trying to create a magazine like this.
Firstly, keeping my magazine layout simplistic. I believe I could have a problem with this because I may have too many ideas and get carried away, therefore I need to keep my 25 word pitch in mind throughout creating my magazine.
Secondly, having a photogenic and look-the-part model. As you can see from my magazine analysis' all of the artists on the cover fit the part and look very experienced. However, because I am just an A-level student I may struggle with finding a perfect model. To fit the part, my model needs to have experience and fit into the 'Popular Music' genre. Luckily for me, my model is perfect for the part.
Next, sustaining easy to read but effective fonts. I believe font's need to look like my chosen genre, however finding perfect fonts could be difficult therefore I need to be careful about which fonts I use.
Lastly, I need to consider my colour palette also. Using too many colours could destroy the simplistic magazine I am hoping to achieve and it could potentially look to busy, therefore I need to choose my colours carefully just like my fonts.

Magazine Title Choices

For the planning stage of my magazine, I have created a list of magazine title choices in order to speed up the process:

Bop
X
Z
MS
Click
Connect

I have chosen these specific names for my magazine because they are simple and I can work with them effectively.
I think the word 'Bop' is clever because when you hear the word it makes you think about pop which is the music genre I am focusing on (Popular Music). I think this is intelligent and original.
The letters 'X' and 'Z' for a magazine title is effective because I can do a lot with them just like 'V' magazine. This titles enable me to work around the title using creativity and individuality.
I like the idea of 'MS' for a magazine title because it is my initals therefore it is personal to me and also links back to my target audience (female teenagers) as the majority would be classed as 'Miss'.
I chose 'Click' because I like the way it sounds when it is said and also I like the contrast because you cannot click a magazine therefore it is ironic and individual.
I chose 'Connect' also because it seems quite personal. You could infer that the magazine is trying to connect to the reader on a personal level.

Later on in my blog I will choose my magazine title and analyse why I chose it in more detail.

Audience Research

I decided to do my audience research on mainstream and my music genre, popular music is classed as mainstream in todays society. The groups which came up in mainstream tribes are chavers, fan girls, chavs, sports junkies and blingers.
I believe mainstream is inferring to teenagers mainly. This is because the majority of teenagers are stereotyped into these groups. The mainstream features of this tribal society are chart music (mainly popular music), prime time TV, local nights, recognised fashion and regular drinking.

The questions I will be asking my peers are:

  • What is your all time favourite song?
  • How often do you listen to the radio?
  • What music artist inspires you the most and why?
  • Which three colours remind you of Popular Music?
  • Where do you shop most for clothes? How often?
  • If you do listen to the radio, which radio station(s) do you listen to the most?
  • Where do you purchase your music from?
  • Do you listen to music in the charts such as 'The UK Top 40'?
  • Can you relate to lyrics of the songs you listen to?
  • What is your favourite music genre and why?
Later on in my blog posts I shall be using the website surveymonkey.com in order for peers to answer my questionnaire and receive their feedback.

Research Relevant Photographers, Graphic Designers and Magazine Creators

Photographer - Terry Richardson
Terry Richardson is a famous American fashion and portrait designer. His main work has been in magazines such as GQ, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Vice. Richardson sustains repeating themes through his work such as using high-profile celebrities and using an instant camera. The photographer is well known for using a white background, having photos taken with his models and trading his trademark glasses. The sexual atmosphere of Richardson's photography has always been controversial as has the sexual atmosphere and  activity at his photo shoots in particular on the part of Richardson itself. Richardson has been accused multiple times of sexual exploitation of young models.
Despite Richardson's negative background I think he would be the perfect photographer for my magazine as his images are simple which allows me to use mastheads and cover lines around the image effectively to fill in the negative space.

Graphic Designer- Ruth Ansel
Ruth Ansel is the graphic designer for 'Harper's Bazaar' Magazine. She was the art director for 'The New York Times Magazine' and 'Vogue'. Each time, she was the first woman to hold this position. Her work is very similar throughout. They are kept at a minimal and look quite simplistic. She enables everything to be read easily therefore is more appealing for readers. Her work is quite quirky. It involves colour often and can be considered quite original.
I think Ruth Ansel's work could have been considered on my magazine because I enjoy the simplistic look with colour used regularly.

Magazine Creators - Christophe Brunnquell
Christophe Brunnquell is the creator of 'Purple' Magazine. He is also a French art director and artist. The popularity of 'Purple' magazine increased his popularity and boosted his career. Since then, he has worked with Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Celine. The creator has changed the way magazines look and continues to focus on having many images throughout the magazine. Brunnquell's magazines often use large white areas with works surprisingly well.
Christophe is different to the style I would like in my magazine however I do enjoy his individuality and contrast between modern magazines. I think his specific work would work well with a music genre such as Indie music however this could apply to popular music and my magazine if i chose to just focus my work on just providing images.
The images I found from Christophe's work came from the magazine 'Purple' in order to get a good example.

Magazine Institution - Publication

Hearst Magazines UK are one of the biggest Magazine Publishers in the UK. They publish magazines for brands such as ELLE, COSMOPOLITAN and Reveal.
Established in 1910 by William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Magazines UK are now one of the leading media companies with 20 magazine brands and 20 digital assets.
Their major interests include Newspapers, Magazine publishing and radio and television broadcasting.

I feel that this Publishing company would be perfect for my magazine as they are an extremely diverse publishing company who are experienced and well known. Also, they already publish magazines for ELLE who's magazines are a very similar look and feel to what I want my magazine to eventually look like.

Mood Board

Language Register

For my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread I have chosen to use a mixture of formal and informal language.
I have chosen to half use formal language because I think it's important for a magazine to be formal slightly as it will not discourage readers. Also, I believe using formal language appeals to a wider range audience as everybody can understand it and read it effectively. The use of formal language is accepted in every day society and also appeals to a wider audience than my own (teenagers between the ages of 15 to 25).
I have also chosen to half use informal language because I believe it is important for readers to relate to the magazine and also so the magazine is personal to readers. Informal language allows the readers to feel engaged in what they are reading. Informal language would appeal to my target audience more (teenagers between the ages of 15 and 25) as it is a language teenagers use on an every day basis.

By reading the double page spread in 'Billboard' magazine on Rihanna allowed me to identify which language register is applied to the article. I identified that the double page spread for 'Billboard' magazine was informal and formal language. Formal language was identified as the article contains facts and the writer writes as if they are interviewing the artist. Informal language was supplied through biased language. The use of 'obviously' indicates this. The writer also writes sometimes as if they know the artist. By using detailed language about her personality (such as 'ever changing', 'daring' and 'high-profile') suggests that the writer knows a lot about her or that they are close to her. This language could be aimed at both young and old-ish audiences as it uses a variety of language to ensure it appeals to a wider range audience.
'Q' magazine uses the same language. However, the language used is more story-like and descriptive suggesting they are trying to sell the article rather than focus on appealing to a wider audience.
'Spin' magazine uses formal language on their double page spread. This is effective because it allows readers to discover more about the artist rather than being bias about what the writer thinks. This allows the audience to create their own opinion on the artist rather than somebody choosing it for them through biased language.

Analysis of Exsiting Magazine Titles

These are masthead magazine titles I have decided to analyse. As you can see, I have not only just decided to choose magazine titles from my own genre (Popular Music) I have chosen others in order to see a contrast.

'V' magazine is a spin-off of 'Visionaire' (an exclusive fashion magazine full of clothing and accessories middle class people are unable to get hold of or afford). I believe 'V' magazine is effective because it supplies fashion for a wider audience. The use of a simple letter could connote that everything in the magazine is simply laid out and easy to read. The magazine's from 'V' I have chosen to preview on this post their font colours are pink and red. The use of pink could perhaps connote that the magazine's target audience is females and the use of red could connote a lot of passionate articles in the magazine which readers are intrigued to read. I think the idea of pink and red as a colour for a magazine title is intelligent because it simply tells the reader that the magazine is mainly aimed at females if males are considering buying it.
'GQ' magazine is shortened from Gentleman's Quarterly. I like the idea that the title has been simplified because it is easier to remember this way. The font is bold, suggesting that the magazine or magazine title is important. The use of black on this magazine connotes mystery and depth. These connotations suggest that the magazine is full of exciting things which the readers may not be expecting. By featuring 'man' in the title suggests the magazine is for males.
'Clash', 'billboard', 'spin' and 'Vibe' magazine look fresh. Although they are different fonts, the boldness of 'GQ', 'Clash' and 'billboard's' fonts suggests again their importance and that it should be noticed. By 'billboard's' magazine title not being in capitals is effective as it is informal for their audience therefore it is more personal to them, making them wanting to read on in the magazine. The white colour of all the titles connote success, freshness and goodness. This could suggest that the magazine is successful and contains fresh and truthful articles therefore the use of font and colour for this magazine title is effective for their look.
'NME' is different. The font is bold, suggesting it's importance. However, the magazine title has created something different here. The use of black, white and red connotes intensity, importance and power. This is effective because the colour stands out therefore keeps readers on alert for important information. All of these colours together are effective because they compliment each other well and they are appealing. The use of capitals in the title suggests the magazine is loud, busy and has a voice. This is effective as it gets across the genre of the magazine (Pop/Rock) as this music genre is usually noticeable.
Lastly, 'Pop' magazine is interesting. The font is graffiti-like. This is effective because it suggests this magazine is aimed at the rebellious and younger audience. The font is also effective as I would assume graffiti-like font would apply to rap/r&b magazine genres not pop therefore it suggests rebellion in the magazine. The use of black makes the title stand out and this is effective as it is difficult to miss. The black outlining the title connotes power and this is effective as it could suggest it is better than other magazines. From this magazine title image I think the magazine title is then repeatedly written inside the main 'Pop' title. If this is the case, it is very effective as it again suggests the magazine's importance and that readers should remember the name. The use of white complimenting the black text within the magazine title connotes goodness and simplicity. This is effective as it could suggest to readers that the magazine is laid out simple and not over complicated and also provides truthful articles inside. The idea that there is not really a gender colour supporting the magazine title suggests it is aimed at both genders and this is effective as it appeals to a wider audience.

By analysing magazine titles from my own music genre allows me to think about what makes a successful magazine logo. Popular music magazines such as 'Spin', 'V' and 'Billboard' allow me to do this. As you can see, these magazines have used a bold text in order for their magazine to stand out. This is effective as they stand out against the contrasting background.
The majority of magazine titles are short and simple. This is effective as readers are more likely to remember them and also they look better on the cover. Magazine titles such as 'V' are mostly effective as you can do a lot with them such as the artist on the cover holding it.
Many magazines change the colour of their magazine title after every issue. This is effective because the colours can be used to compliment the other colours on the page.
From analysing magazine titles I can infer that using bold fonts stand out more than regular fonts and using contrasting colours draws the readers in.
