Analysing Magazines (Billboard Contents Page)

Masthead
The masthead of the page is featured at the top. This is to make readers aware what page they are on (the contents).
The magazine designers have chosen to use a black font. This is effective because it makes it easier to see and also compliments the white background. It also lets the readers know that this page is important to get around the magazine.
The font is bold and in capital letters. This also lets the readers know that this page is important to make your way around the magazine. The boldness emphasises solidness and stability, perhaps inferring that the page contains a lot of information.
The font looks unique. You can see the background through the font where parts have been erased. This makes the title stand out more and ensuring you wont miss it.
By using the word 'contents' on the contents page allows the readers to know what page they are on.

Issue Number
The issue number is below the contents page, making it easier for everyone to identify when the magazine was released.
The font of the issue number is black, it contrasts well with the blue background.
The issue number is in a small font (yet bold). This suggests that it is not the most important text on the contents page however it should be viewed and noticed.

Images (Including Main Image)
Images have been used on the contents page to vary the ratio of images and text as large groups of text may discourage the readers.
Three images have been used in the top half of the page. This has been used to make the page look more appealing, to appeal to audiences and also to let readers know there is an article on them (I could infer this from page numbers being on the image). This is effective because it will draw readers who enjoy these famous stars in. The three images are all different, one is dark and mysterious, one is bright and colourful and the other is colourful but simple. This is to ensure readers have at least one article in the magazine which appeal to them (weather it's the people in the magazine, the clothing, the colours or anything else in the images).
A boost has been placed in the bottom half of the page. This is effective because it again splits up the ratio of text and images. It has also been used to make the page more appealing. Using a large picture here could tell the readers that the people starring in the image are very popular, or that there is a large article on them in the magazine. Because of this, it draws readers in as they may want to find out who they are or they could be a fan so want to read about them. The white background in the image draws attention to the text above it.
The people in the images are of different genders, ages and race. This allows all readers to feel comfortable reading the magazine as they are not being ageist, sexist or racist. It also makes readers feel like they belong and that the magazine is for everyone.
The images could infer that they are the more important articles in the magazine.

Colour Pallet
The colour pallet of the contents page is very colourful yet sticking to a colour scheme. Although it includes colours such as pinks, purples, yellows and oranges it's main colours are black, white and blue.
I think the use of colour is effective because it draws the readers in and stands out, however too much colour could look unorganized and unappealing. The use of colours down the 'No.1 On The Charts' gives as rainbow effect which looks appealing and appeals to both genders.
The use of blue lines around the texts splits the texts up. This is effective because it keeps the page organised. Sticking to a colour theme means more people will find the page appealing and organised.

Layering
There are over 20 layers on this magazine. They are all individually needed for something on the page. These come from subtitles, titles, images, other text's, lines, colours, tables etc. All of these work together to ensure a successful page is achieved.

CVI (Central Visual Interest)
The main visual focus on this page is the main image. It's the largest item on the contents page therefore readers are more likely to see this first. The artist's eyes are looking at the audience therefore this will draw the readers in.

Features
The features the magazine covers are clear but not clear enough on this contents page. The page has been split into a quarter and three quarters. This is effective because it allows the readers to notice which side of the page holds most of the information therefore is the most readable.
The Billboard magazine focuses on publishing the hottest singles and albums. The magazine has chosen to show this on their contents page. This is effective because it allows readers to notice the songs they enjoy and perhaps consider listening to others published.
The magazine also shows the features they have in the magazine on the contents page. This is effective because by having it under a subtitle highlights that this is where the features are shown and also that the magazine publishes them.
The magazine has numbered what pages the stories are on. this is effective because you can find them successfully without any hassle.

Fonts
The fonts published have been specifically featured in order to get across a certain look.
Subtitles such as 'upfront', 'features' and 'music' use black font and capitals. This is effective as it lets the readers know that this text is important on the page. A modern yet stylish font has been used in order to sustain the modern look of the magazine. This is effective for readers who enjoy the modern look rather than an old fashioned one.
The magazine has used a simple, black serif font throughout. This is effective because although they use it regularly, because it is black it is easy to see amongst the white and grey backgrounds. Although the font is stereotypical to use, it is effective because it is simple, easy to read, and not over complicated.
Important or good stories are in a sky blue colour and are in capitals. this is effective as the colour stand out and the capitals suggest that the story shown is good or important and that the audience should consider reading it.
At the bottom of the page, 'Events' and 'Online' have been put in a light green font. This is effective as it is appealing against the white background and also lets the readers know that although it is at the bottom of the page, it is worth reading.
