Analysing Magazines (Spin Magazine Double Page Spread)

(CVI) Central Visual Interest
The central visual interest of this double page spread is the main image. This is because it takes over the left side of the page and is the most noticeable feature on the pages. I know this because the brown background and clothing of the artist contrasts with the white background on the recto.

Alleys
Alleys have been used on the recto. This is effective because it keeps the page looking neat and professional. It is also easier for readers to read if the article is organised properly.

Main Image
The main image is effective. This is because the colours of the background behind the artist and the recto's background contrast well. The brown background creates a wob for the text on the left page. This is effective because it looks unusual and draws the readers in.
The use of a mid shot is effective here. This is because readers are able to identify who the artist is faster and if they want to read the article on them.
The use of shadow on the artists face connotes mysteriousness and intrigues the audience. This image would make them want to read on and find out information about them.

Layering
There are 12 layers on this magazine. They all work well together in order to achieve this look. The layers include a background, main image, masthead, byline, dropcap, main text, text, lines and shapes.

Colour Pallet
The double page spread consists of brown, black and white colours.
The use of black and white is effective as it is simple and everyone can read it without and trouble.
The use of brown is individual and different, meaning not many other magazines consider this. This would be appealing to the readers.
Fonts
The use of fonts is creative on these pages.
The masthead has been put in two different fonts. The masthead on the left page is white in scruffy italics. This is effective as it can be seen behind the brown background of the image and also the 'scruffy' italics is effective as it is ironic to the text written ('kid's write not very neatly). The masthead on the right page is in a large, modern, black font. This is effective as it contrasts well with the white background and stands out so we can clearly read the artist's name.
The majority of the other texts are in century gothic. This is effective as it is easy to read and modern (the type of font needed for long articles).

Flush Left
The main article is flush left. This is effective as it keeps the page looking neat and professional and not over complicated.

Pull Out Quote
The pull out quote is effective because it stands out to the reader and also we can infer from the quote what sort of personality the artist has.

Standfirst
Using a standfirst is effective here because it lets the readers know where the article starts.

  1. after all these posts you'll need to express an opinion on which style of magazine you like the most and why. You'll also need to identify any potential problems you can foresee in trying to make a magazine like these.

  2. I have reflected on this comment and I considered what was said. In another blog post, I wrote about which style of magazine I liked the most and explained why. I also identified any issues I may have if I was going to create a magazine similar to my favourite style.
