Analysing Magazines (Billboard Double Page Spread)

CVI (Central Visual Interest)
The central visual image of the magazine is the main image. Audiences automatically look at this image as soon as they reach the page. This is effective because the artist in the image is Rihanna- therefore the audience will know automatically what the article is about.
I think this image is the central visual interest because the black background of the image contrasts with the white background of the page therefore we notice it more when we get to the page.
The idea that the image is quite large also makes it the central visual interest.

Alley
Alley's are used on this page. They ensure that readers can read the article clearly without any complications.
The alley's give an idea to the readers how long the article is. This is effective because if the article is too long, they may be discouraged away from it. However, setting up the page in an organised fashion appeals to the audience and if the article is on something they are interested in they will be more likely to read it.

Main Image
The main image is clever. This is because it is the central visual interest, therefore the readers will view this first out of everything and they will be able to find out who the article is about and decide weather it is worth reading or not.
The main image is intriguing as the black background compliments the white background it is on. This is effective because it makes the image stand out most.
The main image includes the artist Rihanna. This is effective because it allows the audience to know who the article is about.
The use of colour in the image is effective. It uses bright atomic pink to stand out and also to compliment the pink text used in the article. By using matching colours makes the page look more appealing and people are more likely consider reading it.
In the image, Rihanna is wearing revealing clothes. She is wearing black fishnet tights, black high glittery boots and a glittery short pink all-in-one. Her use of colours contrasts well with the colour of text provided on the page. This is appealing because it is flirtatious and draws the readers in.

Layering
There is around 18 layers on this double page spread. They all have a specific instruction. This includes large text, medium text, small texts (both pages), paragraph subheadings, quotes, images, page numbers, main image, background, table and many more. Without all of these, the pages would not be as successful and organised as they are.

Colour Pallet
The colour pallet of the page consists of black, pink and white.
Black and white are boring, however I believe they create a great contrast and the colour enable you to see things clearly on the magazine. Black and white are a safe colour therefore all readers would appreciate it.
The use of pink is effective on the pages because it compliments the black and white well and makes the page stand out a lot more rather than just having black and white on it's own.

Other Images
Other images on the magazine are effective too. The other images show us who the article is about. The top image shows Rihanna with another person and the bottom image shows Rihanna in TopShop. These images are effective as it gives the readers an idea of what sort of work she does. This will allow readers to gain an interest in her if she is with somebody or somewhere the readers like.
The images also split the ratio of text and images up. This is effective as readers would not be interested in something just full of text. The images make the page look more appealing.

Fonts
Different styles of font are used on these pages.
The body and quote of the article are larger than the rest of the text. This is effective because it tells the readers where the article begins. It also tells the readers that the story is going to be good to read as the text being in capitals highlights over exaggeration or importance. By the text being in a simple yet bold font catches the readers eyes faster.
The main text is in an old fashioned yet simple look. This is effective as the text is not over complicated, allowing readers to view it easier. The old fashioned yet simple font is clever as this font appeals to all ages which would supply an increase in customers.

Feature
The double page spread article is a feature. A more in depth article suggests that the company who create the magazine have a lot of information on the chosen artist. This is clever because it might catch a readers interest if they like the artist and want to read the article. Lots of text indicates there is more than one topic of the artist focused on here. This would intrigue the audience.

Flush Left
The use of flush left makes the article look organised and neat. This is effective because readers will more likely want to read it if its neat not if it is over complicated and uninteresting.

Pull Out Quote
A pull out quote has been used on the left of the double page spread. Using a pull out quote is effective as it gains the readers interest and makes the readers want to read on. Also because it is on the left page indicates that the readers will most likely see this first therefore will want to read on.

Standfirst
The use of a standfirst is effective because it is bigger than the rest of the text. This is an indication for the readers; it lets them know briefly what the article is about before rushing into an article they may or may not want to read about.
