Analysing Magazines (Billboard Magazine Cover)

Masthead
The masthead of the magazine goes under the main image, however because it is a well known magazine company, audiences are still able to read what it says.
The masthead is in lower case. This makes the magazine look informal which is positive because it looks less informal to the target audience and perhaps more personal.
The font size is helpful as it can be easily read depending on the size of the image (the image is only covering the mast head slightly so it does not really affect the readers).
The use of a bold font and a white colour being used allows the magazine title to stand out instead of being hidden behind the main image, the boldness makes it look striking and individual.
The white font contrasts and compliments well with the light grey background making it stand out. Also the colour makes the magazine look modern and on trend suggesting that the music covered in the magazine is up to date and fresh.
The use of the mast head being in the top left corner makes the magazine look more organised as that is where the audience would usually look for the magazine title.
The magazine title 'billboard' is named cleverly. The magazine features hot new music been recently released, therefore the title is ironic because everybody see's and knows what billboards are (like everybody hears new music).

Banner
The magazine does not really have a banner, however above of the masthead there is a line of writing giving information of when the magazine was released and where you can go to for the website etc.
The font is minimal and small, suggesting it is not the most important information on the cover.
Because the font is small, a black font has been used against the light grey background to stand out. This is effective because if the font was in a similar colour to the background, readers might miss out on the information.
Between the font, there is small circles (like bullet points) to let the readers know that they are different types of information. This is effective because it looks neat and makes readers aware.
By having the date of when the magazine was released on the front cover allows readers to keep track of the latest magazine which has been published.
The use of website addresses being featured on the cover allows the readers to consider using the website as well as reading the magazine.

Main Image
The main image is a mid shot of Miley Cyrus in a posed, flirtatious and revealing stance. The use of just one model identifies that she works independently and she could be the boost of the magazine.
Miley has been edited in front of the magazine title to tell the readers and audience that she is important in this magazine.
Miley's hair, make up and accessories are light colours such as nude and blonde and her outfit and tattoos are black. Of colours are effective here because they go well with the colour scheme of the magazine. The colours chosen to be on her compliment the font colour and background. By sticking to a simple colour scheme makes the magazine look organised and minimalist. It also makes the magazine easier to view as there is not many things going on the front page at once (it is not over complicated).
The image has been placed in the centre so all attention is focused on her and also so all information around it can be seen easily.
Miley's look has been changed recently, such as her hair, clothes and music. Her eyes are central of visual interest, meaning the readers and audiences would be drawn in. Her eyes look serious yet mysterious, suggesting it relates to main cover line 'Miley 2.0' that perhaps Miley has changed and wants to share this with her fans.

Colour Pallet
The designers of the magazine have used wob through out to ensure you can see the font written.
The colour pallet of this magazine is white, grey and black. These colours all compliment each other as they are contrasting and look simple, modern and fresh.
The white font's make the magazine look new, simple and modern which would draw the readers in.
The grey background helps the magazine look approachable, soft and not too formal but still sophisticated and making you want to read it.
The black font makes it stand out from the back ground and although the font is small, it looks significant.

Layering
The magazine has seven layers altogether. The layers include everything on the cover such as the background, masthead, cover lines, main cover line, banner and the main image.
The layering order of this magazine is specific in the process of publishing because the masthead is below the main image, therefore it has to be in a certain order.

Main Cover Line
The main cover line is potentially the same font size as the masthead. This infers to the readers that this is an significant subject/ story in the magazine.
The colour of the font is white to suggest to the readers that it is new news about the main image. This is effective because if the main image appeals to the audience, they would consider buying it.
There is a lot of spacing between the letters of the main cover line. This is effective as it is still easier to read but to also get across to the readers that it is significant in the magazine and should be read.
The font design is similar to the magazine title. This emphasises that the magazine is organised.
The main cover line is intriguing as it says 'Miley 2.0'. It suggests there is a version two of Miley therefore it appeals to fans of the artists because they will want to know more about it. By using '2.0' instead of version two simplifies the magazine cover for the readers and also hides the news about the artist. It could also suggest it is fresh and new information.

Cover Lines
The cover lines are of the same font and the same colour. This suggests again that the magazine publishers want to keep the magazine cover organised.
The cover lines are at a minimal font. This is to ensure the freshness and modernness of the magazine.
A talkie headline/ pull out quote is introduced to draw readers who enjoy Miley in.
One of the cover lines which is a subhead includes some of the words being in capitals. They are strange words such as 'STARDOM', 'PANDORA COMES TO EARTH' and 'GOLD'. These particular words I have chosen to pick out because they do not match with the other cover line and also they do not match with the image. I think these specific words have been chosen to leave the readers questioning what it is about. It is intriguing and because they seem like positive words it makes the audience want to read more.
One of the cover lines introduces a sell. They have chosen to tell the readers that Miley has sold 7 million albums. This is effective because it introduces to the readers that she is quite popular and should consider reading about her.
